Mission Statement

The American APS Association is a not-for-profit organization with a mission focused on awareness, research, and education of Antiphospholipid Syndrome. AAPSA provides support for those affected by APS, including but not limited to the diagnosed, their family and friends; such support is given in cooperation with other organizations that have a positive effect on the lives of APS patients in the USA.

Volunteer Staff

The volunteer staff manage the American APS Association in all aspects of business including the editing of this website, printing educational materials, promoting awareness campaigns, representing the AAPSA at medical conferences and much more. Some of the volunteer staff are as follows:

Medical Advisory Board Print E-mail

The American APS Association has some of the most respected physicians in the APS community on the Medical Advisory Board. At the 13th International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies, representatives of the American APS Association met with the top doctors of their area of specialty and formed the highest qualified board of medical advisors. We are proud to have these professionals on our team.

Silvia Pierangeli, PhD - Professor, Internal Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology. Dr. Pierangeli is currently working on new therapies for Antiphospholipid Syndrome. She has dedicated her research to the pathogenic mechanisms of antiphospholipid antibodies in APS and Lupus. Dr. Pierangeli recently chaired the 13th International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Galveston, Texas where she currently conducts her research at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

Doruk Erkan, MD - Associate hPysician-Scientist at the Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Diseases, Assistant Attending Rheumatologist and Clinical Researcher at Hospital for Special Surgery, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. It is an honor to have Dr. Erkan on board. His dedication to the study of antiphospholipid syndrome makes him a wonderful addition.

Robin Brey, MD - Professor of Medicine in the Division of Neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonion (UTHSCSA), Associate Dean for Research of the UTHSCSA School of Medicine, Deputy Director of the Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science, Chairperson for the NIH/NINDS Study section reviewing career developement awards. As a neurologist, Dr. Brey has great interest in the APS and the effects on the brain including stroke and non-thrombosis neurological manifestations. Dr. Brey co-chaired the 13th International Congress on Antiphospholipid Antibodies.

D. Ware Branch, MD - Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UUHSC, HA and Edna Benning Presidential Chair at the UUHSC, Program Director for the Utah Women's Reproductive Health and Education Research, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the LDS Hosptial, Director of the Fellowship Training Program in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Dr. Branch has become the most respected in his field for treatment and management of APS in pregnancy as well as other thrombotic  disorders in pregnancy and recurrent pregnancy loss.

Thomas L. Ortel, MD, PhD - Directory, Anticoagulation Management Service, Director, Duke Clinical Coagulation and Platelet Immunology Laboratories. As a hematologist, Dr. Ortel has interests in the thombotic manifestations of APS. His interests include many facets of APS including heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, anticoagulation therapy management, coagulation factor inhibitors and other inherited thrombotic and hemorrhagic disorders.

Barry L. Myones, MD - Associate Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and Immunology, Baylor College of Medicine; Director of Research, Section of Rheumatology, Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Myones holds great respect among the APS community for his focus on the effect and treatments of APS in pediatrics.
